Prevent Stretch Marks During Pregnancy

More than half pregnant women develop stretch marks during the sixth or seventh month of pregnancy. Stretch marks have begun to be associated with pregnancy and many women think that nothing can be done to prevent them. Fortunately, there are some basic steps you can take to prevent unsightly stretch marks from appearing.

Stretch marks or striae are a form of scaring of the skin characterized by different color hues caused by the tearing of the dermis. The color of the stretch marks depends mostly on the skin tone. Women with a light skin tone usually develop pinkish and women with darker skin tones develop stretch marks that have a lighter color. During pregnancy stretch marks might appear on the breasts, stomach, hips or thighs.

Stretch marks appear due to the sudden weight gain as the skin cannot keep up with the changes that are taking place in your body. Hormonal changes are also believed to be a contributing factor. Although stretch marks fade over time there's no cure for them so prevention remains the best policy. To reduce the possibility of developing stretch marks several preventative measures are available.

  • Maintaining skin moisture is one of the best ways to prevent stretch marks. By making sure you keep your skin healthy and well moisturized you minimize the chances of getting them. Moisturizing cream work well but natural solutions such as olive oil or cocoa butter are just as efficient. Also don't forget to moisturize the skin internally as well by making sure you drink enough water every day.

  • Conventional lotions or body creams don't reach the dermis but they help relieve the itchiness and the dryness associated with stretch marks. Avoid scratching as much as possible to limit the skin damage. The skin is already vulnerable from all the changes that are happening in your body so scratching can only does your skin a big disservice.
  • Skin elasticity depends mostly on genetics but it can be improved with a proper diet. Make sure that you get all the necessary nutrients you need by having a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, getting high quality lean proteins and complex carbohydrates. To prevent stretch marks make sure to include in your diet foods with a high content of vitamin A, E and C.

  • Vitamin A is well known as an effective anti-inflammatory, whereas vitamin E is also used externally being considered extremely useful in preventing stretch marks. Avoid taking a vitamin A supplement as overdoses of vitamin A are toxic. Zinc is also very useful in preventing conditions such as dandruff and acne and it seems to be helpful in preventing stretch marks.

  • You can also try massage to increase blood flow and prevent stretch marks. Gently massage the areas that are at risk of being plagued by stretch marks. Always use a moisturizer when performing the massage. A light form of exercise such as a daily 15 minutes walk or a quick yoga session can also help you maintain the skin's firmness and will keep the water circulating correctly within the body with is especially important to help you have an easier delivery as well.
